"Shōmen-dōri," a street in Kyoto

"Shōmen-dōri," a street in Kyoto

Yesterday, NHK aired a program called "Hideyoshi and the Secrets of Kyoto."

So, here’s a story about the streets of Kyoto.

Walking straight ahead ...which makes me wonder, “What exactly is the front facing?”

When I looked into it, I found two theories.

Both
are shrines and temples with deep connections to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Taiko.

The shrine is Toyokuni Shrine, and the temple is Hōkō-ji.

After his death, Hideyoshi was enshrined as a deity under the name Toyokuni Daimyojin.

Since it faces Toyokuni Shrine head-on, it’s called Omote-dori.

The second theory is that it refers to the front facing the Great Buddha Hall of Hōkō-ji Temple, located north of Toyokuni Shrine.

This Great Buddha Hall was founded by Hideyoshi, and

I hear it was three times the size of the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara.

Hideyoshi’s wealth is truly impressive.

Kikaku-tei, Higashi Hongan-ji , Nishi Hongan-ji and other locations.

The Kikaku Residence and Fumon-dori is also known as Nakajuzuya-machi-dori.
