Kamishichiken
Near our office is "Kamishichiken," one of Kyoto’s five traditional entertainment districts. During the Muromachi period, part of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was destroyed by fire, and the shogun of the time ordered the reconstruction of the shrine buildings. Using the leftover materials from that project, seven teahouses were built to serve as rest stops for pilgrims—and that is how it all began. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi hosted the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony. At that time, these seven teahouses were designated as Hideyoshi’s resting places, and when the famous Mitarai Dango was presented to him, he took a great liking to it. As a reward, he granted the seven teahouses the exclusive right to sell Mitarai Dango and authorized them to operate as licensed teahouses— an event considered the true beginning of the teahouses. Today, the Kamishichiken geisha district uses the five-dango crest, which originates from these famous Mitarai Dango. The Kamishichiken Kaburenjo (training hall) also served as the setting for the film “National Treasure.” Currently, at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, the “Odoi” (earthwork) built by Hideyoshi is open to the public as the Aomomiji-en (Green Maple Garden). When you visit Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, please be sure to stop by our shop as well.

Musk
In this article, we’d like to introduce “musk,” one of the key ingredients Rokushingan. Musk is a substance secreted from the scent glands located on the abdomen of male musk deer, which inhabit the Himalayas and the mountainous regions of China. It is a pheromone that male deer use to attract females, and because it emits a very sweet and strong scent, it is also used as a fragrance and in perfumes. I’m sure you’ve all heard of musk. It’s famous in Chanel perfumes, for example. However, if you were to ask whether real musk actually smells that good, it has a strong ammonia-like odor—or perhaps a gamey smell—and certainly cannot be described as pleasant. It develops a pleasant scent when diluted or left to sit for a while. As a medicinal ingredient, it is said to have anxiolytic, tonic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative effects. However, due to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which was ratified about 30 years ago, musk has become difficult to obtain. Our company uses musk that was imported prior to the ratification of CITES. Rokushingan, which contains this musk, can perhaps be considered a rare product even on a global scale.

Measles
As of May 2026, the number of measles cases in Japan is surging. The trend is approaching the highest level seen in the past decade. Infections are particularly prominent in urban areas. Measles is a viral infectious disease also known as “mashen.” It is highly contagious and is known to spread not only through droplets and contact but also through airborne transmission. The basic reproduction number (a figure indicating the average number of people a single patient can infect) is 12 to 18, which is about 10 times higher than that of influenza. "Rhinoceros Horn" (Saikaku), an ingredient in our " Rokushingan," has long been regarded as a specific remedy for the high fever associated with measles. "Measles" is also listed among the indicated conditions for " Rokushingan." Please give " Rokushingan " a try for measles.

Health Tips for the "Season of New Beginnings"
With these bright, crisp spring days continuing, we’ve entered a season marked by joyful occasions such as entrance ceremonies and company orientation events. At the same time, this “season of new beginnings” is also a time when changes in environment and feelings of tension can unknowingly lead to stress, making us more prone to digestive discomfort. In traditional Eastern medicine, it is believed that the condition of the digestive system is directly reflected in the skin.

"Shōmen-dōri," a street in Kyoto
Yesterday, NHK aired a program called "Hideyoshi and the Secrets of Kyoto." So, here’s a story about the streets of Kyoto. When I walked down Omote-dori, I wondered, “What exactly is it facing?” When I looked it up, I found two theories.
